5 basic mistakes when painting wood

, By ROSE CAO, 4 mins to read

Repainting your cabinets, tables, chairs or favorite wooden items by yourself is an extremely interesting experience. It not only helps you save money but also unleashes your creativity, giving your living space a new look. However, this "transformation" journey sometimes ends in disappointment when the paint peels, stains, uneven colors and looks ugly.

So what is the cause? Let's join Son Hong Kieu to check out 5 basic mistakes that any beginner can easily make and how to fix them to have a perfect finished product!

1. Overlooking the important “stepping stone”: Polishing the surface
Many people often ignore or listen to advertisements that “sanding can be skipped”. This is the most serious mistake!

Consequences: Untreated wood surfaces will have scratches, old paint or excess wood. This causes the primer and new topcoat to adhere poorly, peel off easily, and the surface to be rough and unsightly.

Solution: Take the time to thoroughly sand the entire wood surface with sandpaper of the appropriate fineness. Just sand gently to create adhesion, absolutely do not sand too hard to damage the wood surface.

2. “ Indifferent” to dirt – The number one enemy of a smooth paint layer
After sanding, the wood surface will be covered with fine dust. If you rush to paint, this dust will be permanently embedded in the paint.

Consequence: The paint layer cannot be smooth, the surface will have tiny rough particles, causing a rough feeling and extremely unsightly.

Solution: After sanding, use a soft cloth or dust brush to completely clean the surface. Note: do not use paper towels because they can easily tear and stick to the wood.

3. Skip the “silent hero”: Primer
Many people think that just painting the color is enough. This is a completely wrong concept!

Consequences: Wood is susceptible to reverse osmosis, causing the paint to stain, resulting in uneven and inaccurate color. The paint layer is also less durable and can easily peel off when exposed to external forces or weather changes.

Solution: Always use a primer specifically designed for wood. The primer will create a uniform surface, allowing the topcoat to adhere perfectly, giving the correct color and increasing the product's lifespan.

4. Careless, not paying attention to small details
Painting quickly, painting sloppily, and not allowing enough drying time between coats are common mistakes.

Consequences: Paint is prone to clumping, sagging, creating streaks, air bubbles and uneven color.

Solution: Be patient. Apply thin, even coats. Allow the previous coat to dry completely (as directed on the packaging, usually 4-6 hours) before applying the next coat. After each coat, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper and wipe away any dust.

5. Not protecting the results with a clear coat
After completing the color coat, many people think the job is done. But in fact, you are missing the important final step to protect your work.

Consequence: The paint layer is easily scratched and discolored under the effects of sunlight, rain, water and impact during use.

Solution: Apply 2 more coats of clear paint (gloss, matte or semi-matte depending on your preference). The clear paint will create a solid “shield” that protects the colored paint layer inside, helping the product to be durable over time and easy to clean.

Painting wooden furniture yourself is a process that requires meticulousness, patience and understanding. Just avoid the 5 mistakes above, you will surely own wooden furniture that is satisfactory, has a strong personal mark and is extremely durable and beautiful.
